Modern times

It is of all times. Technology advances, more people get easy access to it and they *will* use it, changing the mindset of a whole generation.

Not so long ago we had a concept of privacy, and we feared it would be infringed top-down (Orwell et al). But modern times have overtaken us. All youngsters nowadays fling their information bottom-up to the top via the cloud. Do they care about privacy? No. They have a completely different mindset.

In development it is not different. In say 1995 it was a hell of a job to setup a decent development environment. So everyone knocked on the door of those who set such thing up. Nowadays a fork is made at a whim. And anyone will do it if they think they can collaborate better on their own environment.

Organizations that try to hold back modern times are doomed to end in demise. No one with the modern mindset wants to spend their time with them. Organizations that adapt to the modern mindset flourish. This is not an opinion, but proven in history time after time.

In flightgear nothing weird has happened for the modern times of 2016. Some just chose a development environment that works best for them. Resulting in AFAIK an environment for planes and an environment for scenery. Anyone can choose to work with the new or the old environment, whichever suits them best. That is the mindset of the current modern people, and nothing can stop them. In a few years you will see a group of teenagers fork either of the current 2 working environment to suit their even more modern way of working.

For the survival of any organization it is important to look at the now (what is there now?) and see from there how to get to a healthy future. Looking back at the good old times when people came knocking on your door, or looking back at past discussions reliving your old pains, will definitely lead to a slow and painful end.

Pull yourself together and accept the now in which there are 2 development environments (in the future even more). And find ways to benefit from the now. There are only problems if you want to see problems. For others there are only solutions to be explored. e.g. Nothing has changed much by there being another development environment. There are still lots of people working on aircraft and scenery. The only thing that did change is that they do not all knock on your door, but you have to get their work from that other environment. Import it in your own environment under the same scrutiny as you do with someone knocking on your door. Nothing changed there. A plane is a plane. Just do not be shy to get things yourself nowadays. It is just modern times. And surely some modern lad will want to help you explore solutions if you technically fail to import.

Kind regards, Vincent

The problem with those modern times occur, when modern technological thinking clashes into old political thinking. Nothing of the whole ruckus was ever really a technological problem, it was all about people trying to protext their influence and even try to win more, for example by plane censorship.

Hi Leo,

Welcome to the club. I read that article. Interesting, but did not find much about being "totally vulnerable and helpless" in it.

I have some thoughts about that. When a person does things repetitively he not just gets programmed for the task, but he gets hardwired. Like the difference between making software and printing a circuit board for a certain task.

Now, when people grow up in a world with certain technologies, there is more different in their minds than just being used to the tools. Take away the iphone of a teenager, and he not just misses a toy, but his brain experiences a big black hole, where formerly his social life resided. Being hardwired like this, the void can not simply be filled with other things.

So yes, people are dependent on technology more then they often think they are. But i do not think that the iphone teenager is more vulnerable and helpless, than someone else who grew up without his whole social life in an iphone. The other person is also hardwired in a certain but different manner, and may be vulnerable and helpless by the loss of certain other tools.

Kind regards, Vincent
