Survey of skills and interest to contribute

Postby KL-666 » Wed Oct 26, 2016 6:24 pm

This poll is to get an idea of where the strengths and weaknesses are of the developing community here. You do not need to be developing right now to fill this out. You may have skills that you are prepared to use some time in the future for Flightgear development.

Just some tips for filling this out:

1) Choose only skills you are really good at. e.g. If you are really good at modelling aircraft, but not so good at UV mapping and you only do that out of the necessity to get livery designers going, then choose only 3d modelling and not UV mapping.

2) Choose only your skills of which you are likely to be interested in to contribute with, now or in the future. e.g. If your day job is C++ programming, but you are only interested in testing planes, and not at all in ever programming C++ for Flightgear, then do not choose C++, but only testing.

I hope this gives some idea of how to choose from your skills: your very best and with the most interest to contribute with. I wish everyone much wisdom in restraining yourselves from ticking all the boxes :-)

Kind regards, Vincent

I went for "Development support (testing, specialist knowledge)" but that's a real stretch. The best I have done was fly a plane, see some potential problems, and report/inquire about it. And maybe also made a logo design that was never used. I feel a bit terrible for not contributing as much as I could've.. :)

Hi HJ1an,

Let it be clear that this is not a who-contributes-most contest. People who do not contribute (much) yet, are as welcome as anyone else to fill out this survey. And remember that people who do not contribute at all and maybe never will, are worth as much at this forum as people who spend hours or days per week contributing. What use is it to build something, when there are no users to enjoy your work?

Kind regards, Vincent

I really have too little knowledge about these items to say.

Maybe GIS is mostly specialized knowledge?
Maybe wed can be 2d?
Generation with terragear clearly looks like "other contribution" to me.

If you are not sure either, then just choose "other contribution".

It would be nice if people who choose "other contribution" let us know what it is by posting something like: I chose "other contribution" for this, this and that.

Just a subjective impression the current interim result gives me.

People here like to make beautiful looking planes (3d, 2d, UV) with great systems (at least i believe the XML scripting is used for systems). But chances that the planes fly well are not very great (not so much FDM interest). Yet they will be be tested thoroughly.

Core programming will not be done (no C++). And maintaining large scale Nasal programs, like the detailed weather do not make much chance either.

Good news is that System Support does not have to depend on one single person only.

Kind regards, Vincent

6 off 3d
4 off 2d

That's 10 people right there that could make a formidable team... with 3 of them having sound UV mapping skills.

And I didn't select any of those boxes...

Now does anyone feel like creating a 3d post and 2d post to pull these guys together such that they can meet in the middle with UV mapping, as it belongs to both disciplines.
