The story goes, the Bundesbahn made losses, so they privatized it. Of course, if you look close who holds the shares, then the Federal Republic of Germany is still the only one. Soooo, nice name change to "Deutsche Bahn", but that's it.
The problems, as with many rail systems is unreliability under severe weather conditions and bottle nacks in the rail net.
